Why Install a Tankless Water Heater?

The four reasons Hickory homeowners switch to tankless:

  • Endless hot water. A tankless unit heats water on demand. As long as the gas and water are flowing, you get hot water - no recovery period, no cold shower at the end of a busy morning.
  • Longer service life. 15 to 20 years with annual flushing, roughly double the 8-to-12-year life of a tank water heater.
  • Lower standby losses. A tank reheats 40-plus gallons of stored water continuously whether you are home or not. Tankless heats only when you turn on the tap. In NC, the efficiency gain is typically 20 to 30 percent.
  • Smaller footprint. A wall-mounted tankless unit reclaims 4 to 5 square feet of basement, garage, or utility-closet space.

If you want a side-by-side cost and lifespan comparison, see the table on our tankless water heater service page.

Tankless Water Heater Types We Install

Gas Tankless (Natural Gas or Propane)

The most common type in Hickory installs. Gas tankless units use a sealed combustion burner and a heat exchanger. Most condensing models (Navien NPE, Rinnai Sensei) vent in PVC and produce a small amount of condensate that drains to a floor drain or pump. Non-condensing models use stainless venting and run a bit lower in efficiency.

Electric Tankless

Lower install complexity but high electrical demand - a whole-house electric tankless typically draws 100 to 150 amps. Most Hickory homes need a service-panel upgrade before electric tankless makes sense. We size and recommend honestly: if your panel cannot support it, we say so.

Combi Units (Navien NCB)

A combi unit handles both domestic hot water and hydronic space heat. They are common in newer townhomes and as a replacement when the existing boiler reaches end of life. We install and service the Navien NCB line.

Sizing a Tankless for Your Household

Tankless capacity is measured in gallons per minute (GPM) at a given temperature rise. We size based on three things: how many hot-water fixtures you would run at once during peak demand (typically a shower plus a kitchen sink, plus possibly a dishwasher or washing machine), the incoming groundwater temperature in winter (which is colder and reduces effective output), and the temperature rise needed to reach your target.

For a typical 2-to-3-bathroom Hickory home, that usually lands at a 180,000 to 199,000 BTU unit - a Navien NPE-180 or NPE-210, a Rinnai RX180, or a Rheem RTGH-95. Larger homes or homes with two simultaneous showers running may need a 240,000 BTU unit or a two-unit cascade. We size honestly; an undersized tankless will run out of hot water under heavy demand.

Our Tankless Installation Process

  1. On-site assessment. We measure the gas line, evaluate the proposed install location, check the venting path, and confirm electrical for ignition. Out comes a written quote.
  2. Permit pulled. Catawba County or City of Hickory plumbing permit, included in the quote.
  3. Removal of the old tank water heater. Drain, disconnect gas and water, haul away the old unit. We dispose of the tank properly.
  4. Gas-line upsize if needed. Most homes need 3/4-inch gas service to the tankless. We replace 1/2-inch sections that cannot supply the unit at full demand.
  5. Mount the tankless and run venting. PVC vent runs for condensing units; stainless for non-condensing. Vent terminations follow NC code clearances.
  6. Water connections and condensate drain. Service valves, isolation valves for future flushes, and condensate run to a floor drain or condensate pump.
  7. Start-up, gas-leak test, and temperature commissioning. We pressure-test the gas connections, confirm the unit fires, and set the output temperature.
  8. NC inspection. We schedule and meet the county or city inspector on site. You do not have to take time off.
  9. Walk-through with the homeowner. Where the service valves are, how to flush annually, how to read the error display, what the warranty covers.

NC Permit, Code & Venting Requirements

NC requires a plumbing permit for water heater replacement in nearly every situation. A&B Plumbing pulls the permit, performs the install to North Carolina State Plumbing Code, and schedules the city or county inspector. The permit fee is included in the quote.

Venting for tankless follows manufacturer specifications and NC mechanical code. Common requirements:

  • Minimum clearance from windows, doors, and air intakes (typically 12 inches for sidewall terminations)
  • Slope and support spacing on horizontal vent runs
  • Sealed combustion (no open-flame draft) for sealed-combustion units
  • Condensate drain routing that meets code (no exterior termination that can freeze)

We handle all of this as part of the install. Unlicensed handyman installs frequently fail inspection on venting and gas-line sizing - we see them.

Removal of Your Old Tank Water Heater

The old tank is part of the install scope. We drain it, disconnect gas and water, haul it out, and dispose of it properly through our scrap-metal recycler. You do not need to do anything with the old unit. Floor under where the tank sat often has a small water stain or some sediment debris - we clean that up too.

Install Timeline - Typical One-Day Job

A standard tank-to-tankless conversion is a one-day install for our crew. We arrive in the morning, pull and dispose of the old tank, run gas-line and venting changes, mount and connect the tankless, start it up, and commission it - usually with hot water restored by mid-to-late afternoon. The inspection is typically scheduled within a few business days after the install; you do not need to be there for it, we meet the inspector.

Complex installs (new construction, basement-to-attic vent runs, panel upgrades for electric tankless, gas-meter upgrades) can stretch to two days. We tell you on the quote so there are no surprises.

Tankless Water Heater Brands We Install

  • Navien (NPE, NPN, NCB) - our lead recommendation for most Hickory installs. We are a Navien Service Specialist.
  • Rinnai - reliable mid-range tankless; widely stocked parts.
  • Rheem - condensing and non-condensing tankless models.
  • Noritz - residential and light commercial tankless.

Brand and model recommendation depends on your hot-water demand, gas service, and budget. We size honestly - an undersized tankless is a waste of money.

Frequently Asked Questions - Tankless Installation

Quoted on site after assessment. Pricing varies with the unit, the gas-line work required, the venting run, and whether a condensate pump or electrical work is needed. We give a written quote before any work begins. Financing is available through Wisetack.

Most existing homes do. A 1/2-inch gas line that fed a tank water heater is usually too small for a 180,000 to 199,000 BTU tankless. We replace the section from the gas meter or branch to the unit with 3/4-inch line as part of the install.

A standard tank-to-tankless conversion is a one-day install. Complex installs (new vent runs through finished space, panel upgrades for electric, gas-meter changes) can run to two days. We tell you on the quote.

Yes. We pull the City of Hickory or Catawba County plumbing permit, install to NC State Plumbing Code, and meet the inspector on site. You do not have to be there for the inspection.

For most Hickory homes we lead with Navien. We are a Navien Service Specialist, factory-trained, and we carry common parts on the truck so service is fast for the life of the unit. We also install Rinnai, Rheem, and Noritz - the right choice depends on your demand, gas service, and budget.

Yes, if it is sized right. We size based on peak simultaneous demand (typical case: one shower plus a kitchen sink plus a dishwasher) and on incoming groundwater temperature in winter. An undersized tankless will run out under heavy demand; properly sized, you get endless hot water.
